On belonging, fear, and questions
Let’s keep this one short and simple.
Here are a few ideas I’ve been thinking about:
Cultivating belonging
“When we feel a sense of belonging it is not because we are the same as everyone else, but because we have been accepted as we are.”
—Unknown
How do we create inclusive environments where people feel accepted as they truly are?
How do we balance a sense of being part of a tribe, shaped by social, cultural, and organizational norms, with a sense of individuality and self-expression?
Fear and Treasure
"The cave you fear to enter, holds the treasures you are looking for.”
— Joseph Campbell
What seems scary and uncomfortable to you right now? Giving a big presentation? Interviewing for a new job? Speaking your truth? Navigating an unexpected pregnancy?
What if we treated the physiological response of “fear” (elevated heart rate, shallower breathing, the feeling of butterflies) as a spider-sense that treasure is ahead?
Questions over answers
“The marvelous thing about a good question is that it shapes our identity as much by the asking as it does by the answering.”
— David Whyte
The two questions I’ve been asking myself lately are, What is the best use of me? and What skills can I invest in honing now that will compound over the next few decades?
And you?
What question have you been pursuing recently?
